“How long have you been in the industry?”
I’ve been a stylist for about 6 years. I was born in Europe but grew up in the Okanagan and came to Kelowna to attend hair school at MC College.
“Why did you choose to become a stylist/barber?”
I grew up in a salon, my mom is a stylist so I spent a lot of time there as a kid. I’ve always loved being around people and it’s very creative, no day is ever the same and I like that it’s constantly changing. I’ve also worked in the restaurant industry and customer service for years so I’m comfortable in a fast paced environment. I don’t think I could ever work in an office or anything like that.
“What techniques do you specialize in?”
Men’s hair is my specialty. I get excited when they come in asking for a change and leave happy. Whether it’s a new look or a fix, I love making changes for people!
“Describe your personal style.”
Simple but feminine. I don’t wear a lot of colour and I prefer more classic styles. I think I have like 3 coloured shirts in my entire closet! I really like the neutrals.
“Tell us about your worst personal haircut/hair day.”
Like I mentioned, my mom was a hairdresser so this one time when I was about 15 she enrolled me in a model call for a hair show. I went from having waist length black hair to a mushroom cut with an undercut shaved at the back and four hot pink rat tails. I was traumatized, there were 300o people in the audience and I just burst into tear on stage! On the bright side, they did win Hairstylist of the Year at the North American Hair Awards for that creation. Unfortunately for 15 year old me it didn’t really help my confidence. I’m lucky my mom was a hairdresser, we changed the colour back to natural pretty quick and she helped me keep it trimmed during the awkward grow out phase.
“If you could be any Hollywood movie character, who would it be and why?”
Julia Roberts. I just think she’s so timeless and classy! Eat. Pray. Love is my favourite movie; she has a beautiful smile and you hardly ever hear any drama about her in the media, she’s just very classy.
“If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could only take 3 albums with you, what would they be?”
James Bay. Roxette (that was the best concert I’ve ever been to, it was like my childhood). Embarrassingly enough I would also bring some Justin Bieber partially because my daughter loves him so much.
“If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could only take 3 movies with you, what would they be?”
I don’t really watch TV… but definitely Meet Joe Black, The Thomas Crown Affair, and Eat. Pray. Love of course.
“We’re not trying to pick you up…but what’s your astrology sign?”
Sagittarius, to the core…
“Do you have any nicknames?”
No not really, my close friends call me Sammie.
“What’s one product you simply cannot live without?”
The EVO Day of Grace leave in conditioner – it adds moisture and makes your hair so soft.
