Feature Stylist: Meet Billie-Jean Shepherd

Plan B Kelowna Hair Salon Barbershop | Stylist Billie-Jean Shepherd“How long have you been in the industry?”

I graduated in November 2016 from MC College. After I apprenticed for 6 months while in school, I worked at a couple salons in Kelowna before landing at Plan B; I feel great about working here, it’s a really good fit for me.

“Why did you choose to become a stylist/barber?”

Well I used to work in a kitchen as a cook and I wanted to leave that industry even though I enjoyed the business & creativity. I’ve always wanted to make people feel beautiful. When a client comes in and you can give them that overall change they’re looking for, it feels good. I love the continuous learning and fast pace of the salon, and I really like to be challenged. Collaborating in a creative environment is very satisfying for me.

“What techniques do you specialize in?”

Blonde, I love the blondes! I also love doing long hair, making big changes, or when someone lets you be creative with fashion colours. Fashion colours get my mind going, I love all the amazing things you can do. I really like it when someone comes in and wants something fun.

“Describe your personal style.”

Forever changing! People thinks it’s funny how I can go from casual to punk one day to the next. I haven’t really settled on one look exactly when it comes to my personal style. I like that we can dress how we want in the shop and express our personality through our style, it’s nice.

“Tell us about your worst personal haircut/hair day.”

(*laughs) Well when I was in hair school and had shoulder length hair, I decided to go from black to blond in one day… I ended up with a chemical hair cut because my hair was falling out in chunks! It was bit traumatic to go from medium length hair to a short pixie above my ears. I wore a hat while for like 2 months, it was a learning experience for sure.

“If you could be any Hollywood movie character, who would it be and why?”

Seriously I would be Khaleesi from Game of Thrones. Her hair and her attitude is bad ass, plus she’s the mother of dragons… Every time I watch the show I think “How can I get hair like that?” Turns out she wears $7000 wigs!

“If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could only take 3 albums with you, what would they be?”

I like EDM, a little bit of old school punk, and then probably some City & Colour. I’m a very big Dallas Green fan.

“If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could only take 3 movies with you, what would they be?”

The Parent Trap, the Never Ending Story & Finding Nemo – all the childhood goodies for sure.

“What’s your most embarrassing moment?”

(*laughs) How PG does it have to be? Ok this kind of funny… I was riding my bike down Knox Mountain and hit the front brake which caused me to flip right over my bike! I was pretty out of it as people were gathering around me.

“We’re not trying to pick you up…but what’s your astrology sign?”

Virgo, I’m a people person, I’m sensitive, I always want to help other people. I try to be organized & love animals. I have a dog, 3 cats and share a horse with my mom.

“Do you have any nicknames?”

Um, Bill sometimes BJ… I’m not going into any detail on those.

“What’s one product you simply cannot live without?”

Wind Blown by Redken. Love the beachy tousled wind blown texture it gives you. I use it on most of my clients, I find it nicer than hairspray and different from a dry shampoo.
