“How long have you been in the industry?”
I’ve been doing hair since 2008. I went to hair school at Delmar in Calgary, and have since trained at Vidal Sassoon in Toronto and was an instructor at Ray Hair Arts Academy in Vancouver. I relocated to Kelowna with my fiancé because I wanted to be closer to family, also because the weather here is great!
“Why did you choose to become a stylist/barber?”
I’ve always loved doing hair so I fell into it naturally. I couldn’t sit at a desk all day; I’m really personable and I wanted to do something where I could talk to people, meet new people and learn new things. I definitely enjoy the artistic side of what I do, I love having the ability to change someones day for the better by giving them a great experience.
“What techniques do you specialize in?”
I used to do women’s hair but transitioned to barbering about 4 years ago. I wouldn’t think about going back, it’s fast paced, you get to meet more people in a day. I love it, i never gets boring! I’m stoked that modern barbering is such a trend right now. Guys like to come in and relax and get pampered too, it’s not just a ladies thing. I love doing fades, straight razor shaves, blending the cuts, the attention to detail is so important.
“Describe your personal style.”
I like to keep up with trends, but I’m not into the basic stuff like everyone else. I travel a lot so I shop when I’m away to try and find unique styles. My style changes a lot; I’ve shaved my head for cancer charity, I’ve had extensions, right now I’m going with more of a natural look but that will change – I’m kind of a chameleon. It also changes depending on what city I live in, you know Toronto was cool & swaggy, Calgary was more conservative, Kelowna is a little more hipster.
“Tell us about your worst personal haircut/hair day.”
Probably when I shaved my head, I cried at first as it was a big change but I had fun with it, like I kind of embraced an Amber Rose kinda style. As it grew out I played with colours, did a Miley Cyrus mohawk etc. At one point I had a hair tattoo of a heart which I colored red and from a distance it looked like my head was wounded! But the worst was probably when I had braided extensions, which was fun and I learned how to do them as well, but when I look back at pictures I’m like wtf… so I would never do it again. Think like throwback to Christina Aguilera in her “Dirty” music video… trendy at the time but totally out and embarrassing now!
“If you could be any Hollywood movie character, who would it be and why?”
I would be Channing Tatum’s wife, Jenna Dewan, because she’s hot and funny and she’s an amazing dancer. Also she’s married to him so…
“If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could only take 3 albums with you, what would they be?”
Can I have Soundcloud or something? I would want wifi so I could stream music… I listen to a lot different mixes, like classic hip hop, new R&B, house music, remixes etc. stuff like that.
“If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could only take 3 movies with you, what would they be?”
I like comedies, especially ones with Jennifer Anniston and Adam Sandler. Also documentaries, I like learning new things and I find them really interesting.
“What’s your most embarrassing moment?”
I don’t know… Ok I know- I used to speed skate when I was younger so I would also aggressively roller blade around town all the time. One day I wasn’t watching where I was going and totally nailed a bus stop in front everyone there waiting for the bus, it was pretty bad. I was so confident and was ripping by and it just knocked me down. Everyone was like “Are you okay??” I was pretty embarrassed.
“We’re not trying to pick you up…but what’s your astrology sign?”
I’m a Pisces, so I really like beaches & water (*laughs)
“Do you have any nicknames?”
No not really, mostly just go by Trish.
“What’s one product you simply cannot live without?”
I love Layrite cement, it gives you a great matte finish, but it’s really versatile as well. You can do messy, slick, volume, or you can add shine if you want. It stays put, but isn’t crispy and it smells delicious – women love the smell of it on their men.
