“How long have you been in the industry?”
I started out with training in Kelowna about 5 years ago, then I went back to Calgary and completed my red seal training for hair styling. I got to apprentice under some pretty cool barbers in Calgary, some of them were old school, some new school. I learned a lot and decided to become a barber exclusively. I missed the Okanagan lifestyle so I wanted to come back.
“Why did you choose to become a stylist/barber?”
Sort of a weird chain of events, actually. I started out as a makeup artist and worked for a bunch of big name companies. When I started to do hair I liked that the end result had more longevity, but I wanted a faster pace. So I wanted to combine the detail of makeup artistry with the creativity of hair styling and that lead me to barbering – contouring can be applied to a beard trim, who knew?
“What techniques do you specialize in?”
Every hair cut is awesome because it’s all about details and technique with short hair. The part, the fade, you want everything to be on point. I love every aspect of what I do.
“Describe your personal style.”
Relatively casual, it changes a lot. Sometimes I’m super girly sometimes I’ll just wear jeans and a cute hat, it depends on how I feel that day. In this industry it’s good to have a wide variety of styles.
“Tell us about your worst personal haircut/hair day.”
I am super easy going when it comes to my hair so I make a great guinea pig. I’ve had everything from short and spiky to long extensions. I’ve never really had an awful hair experience, I can rock anything because I think it’s all about carrying yourself with confidence.
“If you could be any Hollywood movie character, who would it be and why?”
I can never come up with these on the spot… I would be Batman, because I always have to be Robyn.
“If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could only take 3 albums with you, what would they be?”
I’m not the greatest with song names, my dad is actually a musician so I would have one of his album. Gotta stay close to my roots, his stuff is like old school folk style. I would probably also have some dance music and some rock and roll.
“If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could only take 3 movies with you, what would they be?”
Deadpool, Happy Gilmore and… I’m tapped out at 2.. I feel like I have to have 3 because I would get sick of the 2 within a week. I would probably prefer to bring a book, “Getting off a desert island for dummies” that has to exist right? Or a journal, that would be good too.
“What’s your most embarrassing moment?”
I’ve got some good drunken stories, but it’s only embarrassing when I get shown the video the next day. I can’t think of anything really specific, I mean I’ve done stupid stuff of course but I don’t really get embarrassed.
“We’re not trying to pick you up…but what’s your astrology sign?”
Scorpio, I have a tattoo of the symbol on my neck. My birthday is November 19th, so I’m on the cusp and tend to pick traits from Sagittarius as well. When I read up on it, it’s relatively accurate.
“Do you have any nicknames?”
I have so many… a lot of people call me Herro, because of my last name and Team America. I’ve also been called Bobs, bobbin, Rubes, Rudy, and Lemon – I don’t even know where that came from.
“What’s one product you simply cannot live without?”
So far my favourite are the original, superhold, and matte Layrite pomades. The fact that it’s water soluble is great because a lot of guys need something that rinses out easily. The hold is great and it’s easy to work with.
